The Death of St. Joseph

1895
Church of St. Blaise, Glottertal, Germany

In this iconographic type Jesus and Mary attend to the dying St. Joseph. Here, perhaps because constrained by the shape of the panel, the artist has placed the saint in a chair rather than a bed.

The cup in the hands of the standing angel can represent both a good death in general and the viaticum that is brought to dying Christians (although of course Joseph died before the sacrifice of Christ on which the viaticum depends).
