Joseph and Mary are both portrayed as young people, with Joseph looking remarkably strong and healthy. The woman behind Mary wears a veil and wimple such as one usually sees on her mother, St. Anne. That would make the man on the right St. Joachim, her husband. The celebrant is dressed as a bishop. That anachronism, and the couple's pose as they kneel to each other, are probably intended to model attitudes for young Christians who marry.
