Vincent de Kastav, The Last Supper

1474
Fresco
Church of St. Mary, Beram, Croatia

The image combines a number of actions narrated in John 13. Above center, John reclines on Jesus' shoulder and asks who is the one who will betray him. Jesus answers, "He it is to whom I shall reach bread dipped." Then, center, he reaches across the table to Judas: "when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon." Judas kneels, lower left, and receives the bread. (Note that he holds his bag of silver behind him so the others cannot see it.)

Finally, below right, Jesus washes the feet of the St. Peter (square beard, balding), as told in John 13:1-26.

His reputation notwithstanding, Judas sports a halo here and in the other frescoes at St. Mary's, Beram (The Agony in the Garden and The Kiss of Judas).
