The Kiss of Judas
First half of the 14th century
Detail from the west façade, Orvieto Cathedral
Details from this relief include the kiss itself, with Judas placing his left hand gently on Jesus' left arm; Peter cutting off the ear of the servant (at the bottom, to the left of Jesus' legs); and the soldiers, who are mentioned only in John 18:3,12. The clubs and swords mentioned in the synoptic gospels appear to be absent.
