Predella of St. Helena: The Three Crosses Unearthed
Predella of the Polyptych of the Madonna and Child
Ducal Palace, Urbino, Italy
The Christians kneel in prayer as servants hoist up the three crosses. Judas (with light still radiating from his head) is now among them, and he is wearing his red mantle again. The figure on the left with the round halo is of course St. Helena. The environment is made to look like the Church of the Holy Sepulcher that Helena will subsequently have built over this site.
