Vittore Carpaccio
Detail from St. Vitalis on Horseback and Eight Saints

1514
Church of San Stefano, Venice

The female martyr to the right of the horse may be Valeria, according to legend the wife of Vitalis and mother of Saints Gervasius and Protasius. On her left is St. Maurice. Left of the horst are St. James the Greater (with the pilgrim's staff) and St. John the Baptist (dressed as usual and with a miniature lamb on a book).
