Pedro Duque Cornejo

The Nativity of the Virgin Mary

1748
Choir stalls, Cáceres Cathedral, Cáceres, Spain

The composition follows the traditional iconography closely, with Anne stretched out in a canopied bed, midwives washing the baby in a basin, and a complement of servants. Cornejo's one remarkable departure is the inclusion of Joachim, Mary's father.
