The Miracle of the Well

1648
Oil on canvas
Museo del Prado, Madrid

This miracle is related in the Vita of María Torribia, the wife of St. Isidore the Laborer (Acta Sanctorum May vol. 3, 553). Isidore came home from the fields to find his wife sorrowing over their son, who had fallen into a well and drowned. He knelt down with her and joined in begging God that the water would swell up to the top of the well and deliver the child. Their prayers were answered, the water did rise up, and the boy was alive again and safe.
