The Apparition of the Virgin to Saint James the Greater

1629-30
Oil on canvas
The Louvre, Paris

Enthroned on a pillar, the Virgin asks St. James to build a chapel in her memory on this site on the Ebro river near Zaragoza. Ranged around St. James are the eight men that he converted while in Zaragoza. The legend says the angels carried Mary from Jerusalem for this visit and also gave James the pillar and a statue of her to be placed in the chapel.
