The Adoration of the Christ Child

Circa 1510-20
Metropolitan Museum of Art, Lehman Collection, 1975.1.116

This painting exemplifies the influence of the Bridget of Sweden's vision in the Bethlehem cave. Mary kneels to the naked child while Joseph brings in a candle (Prophecies and Revelations, VII, 21). Later the shepherds came and "adored him with great reverence and joy" (ibid., VII, 23). The angels, however, are not in Bridget's vision.
