Maso di Banco (active 1320-46)
St. Anthony of Padua

Tempera on wood, gold ground
Metropolitan Museum of Art, 43.98.13, Bequest of Maitland F. Griggs, 1943

This painting is from the years before Anthony was pictured with the Christ Child. The book refers to the saint's defense of orthodox doctrine against the Catharists. As usual, he is pictured tonsured and wearing the brown Franciscan habit with the rope belt.
