Fra Lippo Lippi
St. Lawrence Enthroned with Saints and Donors

Late 1440s
Tempera on wood, gold ground
Metropolitan Museum of Art, 35.31.1a-c

Instead of the usual gridiron that is St. Lawrence's attribute, the artist has used a grid design on the low dais where the saint is seated.

The other saints are most likely Cosmas and Damian. Their identical garb marks them as brothers, and each holds a palm branch signifying martyrdom. Their hats are the kind of padded "rondlet" that was fashionable in the 15th century.1

From left to right, the donors are Antonio, Jacopo, and Alessandro Alessandri.
