Eve and the Serpent

Fragment of a stone relief
Museum of St. Paul Outside the Walls, Rome, Italy

The serpent, coiled around the tree as in most images, has his mouth open speaking to Eve, who reaches for the fruit with her right hand while her left holds a fig leaf to her midsection.

The furry thing between her legs and the tree could be a lamb, used in some other images as a symbol of the work that Eve will be condemned to do after the Fall.

Many images of this episode have Adam on the left, so it is possible that he was on the part of this relief that has broken away.
