Domenico Beccafumi, St. Catherine of Siena Receiving the Stigmata

Unlike Giovanni di Paolo, whose painting on the same subject followed Raymond of Capua's Life quite literally, Beccafumi adopts the manner of representing St. Francis' reception of the stigmata, with laser-like rays proceeding from Christ's wounds to the saint's (example). Also intriguing is the background's painting-within-a-painting of the birth of Christ with Mary and Joseph.
