Angelo de' Rossi
St. James the Less

18th century
Marble, 14 feet high
Basilica of St. John Lateran, Rome

The book refers to the Epistle of James, of which St. James the Less was believed to be the author. The other object he is holding represents the fuller's club with which he was beaten to death.

This is one of twelve monumental statues of the apostles lining the nave of the basilica. St. James carries the fuller's club with which he was killed in Jerusalem.
