Paul Monnot
St. Peter

1708-13
Marble, 14 feet high
Basilica of St. John Lateran, Rome

The keys in St. Peter's left hand refer to Matthew 16:19, "I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven," and are this saint's attribute. The book may refer generally to his preaching the gospel, or specifically to the two letters attributed to St. Peter in the New Testament.

This is one of twelve monumental statues of the apostles, by various artists, lining the nave of the basilica.
