Miriam and Jubal

Pelham, New York, 1843-48
Painted and stained leaded glass
Metropolitan Museum, L.1985.136
Created for and on loan from the Church of St. Ann and the Holy Trinity, Brooklyn, New York

Following a long iconographic tradition based on Exodus 15:20, Miriam's attribute is the timbrel that she took up to celebrate the defeat of Pharaoh in song and dance. Created for the organ loft, this window also celebrates Jubal, "the father of them that play upon the harp and the organs" (Genesis 4:21).
