Caravaggio, The Denial of St. Peter

Circa 1610
Oil on canvas, 37 x 49⅜ in. (94 x 125.4 cm)
Metropolitan Museum of Art, Purchase from Lila Acheson Wallace Gift, 1997.

While Jesus is being tried by the Sanhedrin Peter fearfully denies even knowing him (Matthew 26:69-75). The artist presents him in close-up, oddly illuminated by a warm light that differs from that falling on the two other figures.
