Francesco Grandi
The Trinity

Circa 1862
Oil on canvas with metal crucifix
Church of San Giacomo, Rome

This remarkable variation on the Throne of Mercy has the Father not seated but floating serenely above a joyous dove and a crucifix that is not part of the painting at all but placed before it and atop the tabernacle. This breaking of the plane, coupled with the Eucharistic import of the tabernacle, heightens the sense of joy and exuberance in the painting.
