St. James as Moor-Slayer |
Saint James as Moor-slayer Local Name: Santiago Matamoros. Basis for Identification: Rearing
horse, helmet, right hand held as if for a sword. Other characteristics: Plume on
helmet. Shield hanging from horse's neck. Site: Church of Santiago Tilantongo. Location: Along the west wall of the south section of the transept (see note). Comparable santos in Oaxaca: Cuilapan,
Tilantongo2, Tilantongo3. External Links: Previous santo Introduction to Tilantongo Note: On this site, references to the cardinal directions always assume that the main altar is at the east end of the church, the narthex or entry area at the west end, and the two walls of the nave on the north and south. (The nave is the long central section.) Actual orientations may differ. The "transept" is the part of the building that crosses the nave so that the whole building has the shape of a cross.
