Christ Carrying the Cross

Christ carrying the cross:
The face is somewhat different from the fallen Christ in the baptistery, although it has similarly dark skin: the eyebrows are flatter, the beard shorter and less detailed.

Basis for Identification: Cross, crown of thorns in basketweave pattern, red or purple robe.

Site: Church of San Lorenzo Zimatlán.

Location: In a niche set into the south wall (see note).

Media and construction: Wood, gesso, paint, fabric garments. Eyes: glass. Hair: wig, no hair beneath the wig. Sculpted teeth.

Size: Figure about 5½ feet (165 cm.), cross about 2 feet (60 cm.)

Comparable santos in Oaxaca: Achiutla, Cuilapan, Tlaxiaco, Yanhuitlán.
