Antoniazzo Romano, Madonna and Child with Saints

Late 15th/early 16th century
Museum of St. Paul Outside the Walls

As in 15th- and 16th-century Nativities, the Christ Child is naked and the Virgin holds her hands in prayer.

Left to right, the saints are Benedict (black habit, crozier, tonsure, bifurcated white beard), Paul (sword, hairline), Peter (keys), and Justina (sword in breast, palm branch). Benedict's book is open to the first sentence of his Rule.
