Fragment of a Traditio Legis Scene

4th century
Sarcophagus fragment
Pio Christiano Museum, The Vatican

The figure has the short, square beard that characterizes St. Peter in sculpture of this era. On the basis of other Traditio Legis images, one may posit that the object against his breast is a fragment of a scroll and the object in his left hand a cross.
