The Melide Cruceiro: Detail: top rear

Carved from the same block of stone as the crucifix on the front, this scene of the Crucifixion uses imagery common of a somewhat later date. As in 13th-century Crucifixions Jesus wears a skirt, not a full-length vestment. His feet are fastened to the cross with only one nail, a feature that became common after the middle of the 13th century. His arms are posed as if in a compromise between the gesture of salutation of the front scene and the sag of later imagery.
