This is a more "advanced" version of the Holy Family subject than Piombo's painting from the same period and in the same church. Joseph is still placed in a shadowed background but is much more clearly visible. And unlike Piombo, the artist has broken definitively with the 15th-century practice of showing the Christ Child's genitals.
