Ecce Homo

Late 1980s
Portal of the Passion
Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família, Barcelona

In this modern form of the Ecce Homo iconographic type, Jesus is displayed before the crowd in his crown of thorns and mock scepter. But the Pilate figure does not stand to demonstrate him. Instead we see him in the pose of troubled indecision that preceded his order that Jesus be tortured. Tellingly, his face and expression very much resemble those of Jesus.
