Francesco Salviati
The Deposition

1550
Church of Santa Maria dell'Anima, Rome

The church labels this painting The Deposition, but it appears to be an image of the entombment of Jesus, not the removal of his body from the cross.

The church bell in the foreground is not found in either Deposition or Entombment images. Here it invites the aural imagination to hear contemporary bells that toll the death of Christians. The church bell in St. Charles Borromeo Prays for the Plague-Stricken of Milan also links Christ's death with those of the Milanese plague victims.
