Lazzaro Baldi
St. Rose of Lima

1668
Oil on canvas
Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva

As usual in her portraits St. Rose holds the Christ Child in her arms. The rose and the crown of thorns above her are further identifiers. She was a Dominican tertiary, so she is pictured here in the habit of the Dominican order, which manages the basilica. As patron saint of Latin America, she is flanked by African-American figures on the left and the Native Americans on the right.
