But for the gleam of sun on her shoulder and arm, Veronica's act of mercy seems lost among all the action and bustle of the painting, and the face she wipes emerges only dimly from deep shadow. This and the horseman's gesture to Simon of Cyrene make a powerful point about our heedless pressing on to get the day's work done.
