Bernardo Strozzi
St. Veronica

1625-30
Oil on canvas, 66 x 46½ in. (168 x 118 cm.)
Museo del Prado, Madrid

Unlike the Veronica images of the 15th and 16th centuries, Strozzi's ignores the viewer. The cloth, more like a shawl than a kerchief, is held at an angle, and the Holy Face looks not at the beholder but up to the saint, who in turn looks up to Heaven.
