The Temptation of St. Anthony

1512-16
Oil on wood, 106 x 121 in. (269 x 307 cm.)
Musée d'Unterlinden, Colmar

This panel from the Isenheim Alterpiece is one of many from the medieval and Renaissance periods that picture numerous and frightful devils besetting St. Anthony for overcoming temptation. It is the scene as a whole that identifies the saint, but he is also identified by his long, bifurcated white beard.
