As usual, Herod sits on a throne on a dais with his advisers, wears a crown, and points to the scene below. Non-traditional is the way Duccio evokes pathos by leading the eye in a sweeping S from the dais to the crowd of mothers and finally to the murdering soldiers and the heap of little corpses at their feet.
