The Coronation of the Virgin Mary

1502
Marble
Church of St. John Chrysostom (San Giovanni Grisostomo)
Venice, Italy

Christ crowns a kneeling Mary as the Apostles look on. The Father watches and directly below him the Holy Spirit descends on the scene, a feature recalling the iconography of the Transfiguration and the Baptism of Christ.

A few of the Apostles can be identified. Immediately to the right of Christ, the one beardless youth in the group would be St. John the Evangelist. Immediately to his left, St. Peter holds his keys. The man with the cross and long beard to Peter's right may be St. Philip, who is often identified by a cross. To his right is a man holding a book whose cover bears a cross saltire, the attribute of St. Andrew.
