St. Eleutherius
6th century
Mosaic
Euphrasian Basilica, Poreć, Croatia
There is no historical evidence for this saint, but in the early centuries he was celebrated as a martyr during the reign of Hadrian (117-38), who ordered his execution. His legend is recounted briefly in Butler (II, 121-22) and in the Acta Sanctorum, April vol. 2, 528-39. Also see a hagiographical overview in Analecta Bollandiana, XVIII (1899), 384-88. His feast day is April 18.
