St. George is Welcomed into Heaven

Franciscan Museum, Dubrovnik

The title is my hypothesis regarding the soldier saint in the center. He does not have St. George's shield, and the dragon could conceivably refer to St. Theodore instead. But he does have the spear that George wielded against the dragon of Silena, and George does get considerably more play in the art than Theodore.

The cross may identify the welcoming personage as Helena, but she does not have that saint's customary crown. She could possibly be Ecclesia, pointing the way to Heaven. There is a similar image of Ecclesia with a long cross on a pulpit in Venice.
