Predella of the Holy Ghost: Detail, St. Jerome

In the desert, the saint beats his exposed breast in penitence while contemplating the crucifix. As a gesture of humility, the tokens of his status as cardinal are set aside – the red cape hanging on the bare tree at right, and the flat-top red hat on the ground at left.

The lion, Jerome's attribute, sits at his right. Further identification is provided by the Greek inscription above his head: Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΥΕΡΟΝΥΜΟΣ ("Saint Jerome").
