Vitale da Bologna, Ezekiel's Chariot

Circa 1351-60
Pomposa Abbey, Codigoro, Italy

Ezekiel 1 says the prophet was beside the river Chebar when he received this vision. The blue-green field behind the chariot may be intended to signify that river. Given the difficulty of representing all the vision's wheels and creatures and such, the artist has settled for a very simple picture of the chariot, horses, and some flames. In the vision God is in Heaven, not in the chariot.
