Lamp with Nebuchadnezzar and the Three Hebrew Youths
Tunisia, 400-600 A.D.
Metropolitan Museum of Art (Rogers Fund), 27.94.39
King Nebuchadnezzar sits on his throne and gestures toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, whom he is condemning to the fiery furnace because they would not worship his golden statue (Daniel 3:13-20). A palm tree separates the three from the king, emblematic of both their status as martyrs and the difference between them and the idolatrous king.
