Giralte de Bruselas et al., The Main Retable at Oviedo Cathedral: Detail, Jesus Enters Jerusalem
1512-31
Cathedral of St. Savior, Oviedo, Spain
This relief is unusual in picturing both an ass and a colt, following literally the account in Matthew 21:1-11. Nor does it show anyone cutting branches in the palm trees, a virtually indispensible element in the iconography of this event.
Like the other panels in the middle register of the retable, this one is framed by statues of two barefoot apostles. The one on the left holds a spear, which can be an attribute of either St. Thomas or St. Matthias. The other one has no attributes.
