Fra Angelico
St. Dominic Adoring the Cross of Christ

1442
Fresco
Convent of San Marco, Florence

The star above Dominic's forehead is a common attribute of this saint, and the color it shares with the blood spurting from Christ's side above him makes an eloquent comment on the source of one's sanctity.

The topos of a worshiper kneeling and embracing the Cross goes back to at least the 13th century and this painting by Jacopini da Reggio, in which St. Francis of Assisi is posed in the same way. In the 14th century it was St. Mary Magdalene who was pictured tearfully embracing the Cross in this way (example). There may be examples involving Dominic before this one, but I do not know of any.
