The Virgin and Child

Austria, circa 1335
Pot-metal and colorless glass, oxide paint, and silver stain

This piece has both Gothic and Byzantine features. The medium of painted glass is western, as are the Gothic style of the faces and the simple outlining of broad swaths of color. But the influence of Byzantine icons can be seen in the way the figures face each other and the child caresses the mother's chin.
