St. Dominic and the Miracle of the Books

Fresco
Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio, Milan

The images are painted on two sides of an arch and illustrate a legendary test of truth between St. Dominic and a group of Cathars. On the left, when a book of St. Dominic's writings is put into a fire it simply pops back out. But on the right the Cathars put their book into the fire and it burns up.

The dog at St. Dominic's feet is one of his attributes. Black and white like the habit of the Dominicans, it is punningly in Latin a domini canis, "dog of the Lord."
