Andrea Mantegna
The St. Luke Altarpiece: Detail, St. Julian the Hospitaller

1453-54
Tempera on panel
Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan

This painting follows the traditional iconography of St. Julian the Hospitaller: a young noble holding a wrapped sword upside-down. The one anomaly is the palm branch, which is due to a confusion with the martyr St. Julian of Auvergne.
