Marble
Portinari Chapel
Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio

Along the cornice are statues of the eight "choirs" of angels: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, Angels.

The two small figures in the front center are Saints John and Paul, who were martyred during the persecutions of Diocletian. Above them, St. Dominic and St. Peter Martyr flank the Madonna and Child. At the summit, Christ is flanked by two Seraphim.

The fresco of the Annunciation attributed to Vincenzo Foppa serves as a frame for the lid. On the left, Gabriel raises his hand in the gesture that signifies speech. On the right, Mary holds one hand against her chest. Above, the Father gives his blessing.
