Master of St. Anastasia
St. Bartholomew

First half of the 14th century
Castelvecchio Museum, Verona, Italy
Provenance: Church of Santi Giacomo e Lazzaro alla Tomba, Verona

In the restrained style of the master's other works in the museum, a slender St. Bartholomew holds a book and his attribute, a flaying knife. The knife refers to the belief that he was flayed at his execution. The book is a common prop in images of the Apostles and other saints.
