El Greco (1541-1614)
St. Anthony of Padua
Oil on canvas
Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain
This is one of the earliest images that add the Christ Child into portraits of the saint. The branch of lilies is another of his attributes, as is the Franciscan habit. The artist has not endeavored to show his tonsure.
