St. Isidore — The Blessing of Work

1805
Oil on canvas
National Museum in Warsaw

God the Father blesses Isidore's work as a plowman and the holy family life that he and his wife represent. In the legends the couple had only one child, not two, but the prayerful attendance of the older child recalls the countless portraits in which the child John the Baptist looks on as Christ Child lies in his mother's lap. Also, the scene of nursing refers to the many images in which Mary holds the Child to her breast.
