Johannes Spilberg
Portrait of a Lady as Jael

1644
Gemäldegalerie, Berlin

Dressed as an aristocrat of the 17th century, Jael holds the hammer and tent peg that she used to kill the enemy general Sisera (Judges 4:17-22). Unlike most portraits and narrative images, which follow Judges 5:26, "She put her left hand to the nail, and her right hand to the workman's hammer…," this Jael is left-handed.
