The Chartres Tympanum of the Coronation of the Virgin

First half of 13th century
Central tympanum in the north portal
Chartres Cathedral, France

Though more delicate in execution, this sculpture follows the model of the Coronation tympanum at Senlis: a vertically divided lower register with the Dormition on the left and on the right an Assumption in which angels do the lifting of an emphatically material body; and in the upper register a pair of angels flanking the two crowned figures. At Senlis they sit on a single broad throne with separate backs; here there are two identical thrones. The backs are also identical, except that Mary's has two engaged columns.
