The Meeting of St. Joachim and St. Anne at the Golden Gate

Circa 1515-20
Oak with polychromy and gilding
German, Lower Rhine

The curators who provided this title know a lot more than I do, and the meeting of Anne and Joachim is indeed a popular subject. But in the legend it follows immediately after the couple's long separation from each other, and yet Anne is clearly pregnant. So perhaps the sculpture represents a later moment in Anne and Joachim's time together.
